Beds: Reasonably hard (as they often are in India) but perfectly comfortable and draped in bright turquoise sheets, matching the view. There are only a few bedrooms and they all have balconies overlooking Covelong Beach and windows a plenty, so you drift off to the sound of the waves crashing on the beach. The penthouse at the top has it’s own enormous decking space.
Breakfast: Recommend saving this for post-surf, especially if the Madras Breakfast takes your fancy. It’s not a small portion. They do eggs any style, toast, coffee and juices. The food is beautifully prepared and all served up on the first-floor deck overlooking the beach. With a friendly local team, the surfy travellers and weekenders from Chennai dropping in, it’s easy to fall in love.
Where to practice yoga: On the beach, on the top deck, on the first floor terrace when it’s quiet, or downstairs. Quite simply anywhere. You’ll have the wind in your hair and you’ll never get too hot.
Unique WP factor: The heart and souls that go into this place – all the surf instructors, the hosts, the chefs and.. most especially, Murthy, who started it all. Ask him to tell you his story.
Not many people know but.. faced with opposition from some of the locals, Murthy had to fight to keep his original surf school open. Thanks to his sheer determination and support from an investor, Murthy’s school then moved to the existing location of SurfTurf Covelong Point, right on the beach. He trains all of the surf instructors himself, which includes regular beach clean-ups. Consequently, Covelong Point is one of the cleanest beaches you will find in India.
