Puri Lumbung, Munduk, Bali

Beds: Comfortable and reasonably-sized double beds housed in traditional Balinese wooden huts. Puri Lumbung means ‘rice barn palace’ and with a mosquito net overhead and specatular views from each hut, you wake feeling somewhat regal in your own private palace. If you’ve been travelling along Bali’s heat-hazed coastline and struggling in the humidity, you’ll sleep like a baby here in the cool, clear mountain air of Munduk, Northern Bali.

Breakfast: All the fresh fruit you could dream up, porridge with local honey or the option of local Balinese-style breakfast for the more adventurous.

Where to practice yoga: Wake before dawn and head to the open-sided yoga shala up at Puri Lumbung’s peak (Mustika Hall). They run regular yoga and mediation retreats here you can opt to attend. If not, roll out your mat and surya namaskar to the sunrise over mountain peaks and rice fields, clove plantations and the sparkling blue of the Java Sea in the distance. Alternatively, each hut has it’s own covered balcony and a downstairs terrace perfect for self-practice.

Unique WP factor: The emphasis here is on health and wellness, yoga and meditation. It is an idyllic spot, without the chintz, razzmatazz and bling of many of Bali’s more touristy resorts. It almost has the feeling of an ashram it’s so peaceful. A very special spot.

Not many people know but.. David Bowie and Iman stayed here and hung out in the Artist Bar – so named for all the artists who met over a tipple or two.
